The European Lime Association joins the Negative Emissions Platform
EuLA brings valuable expertise on industrial decarbonisation, carbon capture technologies and recarbonation potential to NEP’s growing network.
The Negative Emissions Platform is pleased to welcome the European Lime Association (EuLA) as a new member.
As the representative body of the European lime industry, EuLA brings important expertise to the Platform at a time when Europe needs credible pathways for industrial decarbonisation and permanent carbon removals. As highlighted in the member announcement visuals, EuLA represents a sector with deep roots in European industry and a strong role in supporting a competitive, sustainable and innovative lime sector across Europe.
Lime is an essential material used across a wide range of applications, including steel, construction, water and air treatment, and agriculture. Through these uses, the lime sector contributes to environmental protection and the functioning of modern society, while also engaging with key questions around climate neutrality, carbon capture and the long-term role of recarbonation.
EuLA works closely with EU institutions and stakeholders on climate and energy, industrial emissions, circular economy, and health and safety policy. This science-based policy engagement, combined with the sector’s experience on carbon capture technologies and the recognition of lime’s recarbonation potential, will add an important perspective to NEP’s work on permanent carbon removals and enabling policy frameworks.
Lime also has an important connection to carbon removal pathways. According to a cited industry article, studies commissioned by EuLA indicate that natural carbonation in the lime sector in Europe could average 33% of process CO2 emissions, with the potential to reach 40% if improved carbonation techniques are applied. The same source notes that in some applications, such as drinking water purification, carbonation can permanently capture all of the CO2 emitted during manufacture.
Welcoming EuLA to the Platform strengthens NEP’s ability to bring together expertise from across European industry to help shape credible, effective pathways for negative emissions. It also reflects the growing importance of cross-sector collaboration in building a robust European carbon removals ecosystem.
Rodolphe Nicolle, Secretary General at EuLA- European Lime Association, said:
“Joining the Negative Emissions Platform marks an important step for our sector. Lime is not only essential to modern society, but it also has untapped potential to contribute to Europe’s climate objectives through carbon capture and recarbonation. We look forward to working with partners across sectors to help shape credible, effective pathways for negative emissions in Europe.”
