Sysav joins the Negative Emissions Platform
The Negative Emissions Platform welcomes Sysav as its newest member. Sysav is one of Sweden's leading waste and resource management companies, turning waste into energy, heat and, through its SkyZero project, permanent carbon removals.
A Public Mission Rooted in Circularity
Owned by 14 municipalities in southern Sweden, Sysav has been transforming waste into resources since 1974. Each year, the company processes around 800,000 tonnes of waste, recovering materials, generating energy and supplying district heating and electricity to the Malmö region. Combining decades of industrial experience with long-term public ownership, Sysav has built its work around a clear commitment to the transition towards a climate-neutral society.
From Waste-to-Energy to Carbon Removal
Sustainability sits at the core of Sysav's mission, and its carbon capture project SkyZero marks the company's next step in that direction. Through SkyZero, Sysav aims to capture and permanently store carbon dioxide from its waste-to-energy operations, cutting emissions while generating permanent carbon removals from the biogenic share of the waste stream. It is a project that shows how carbon removal can be built directly into existing energy infrastructure, turning an established public utility into a driver of negative emissions.
What Sysav Brings to NEP
As part of NEP, Sysav brings the perspective of a public, municipally owned operator delivering carbon removals at scale from waste-to-energy infrastructure, along with the practical experience of translating a large-scale industrial project like SkyZero into reality.
