B10 Char joins the Negative Emissions Platform

The Negative Emissions Platform is happy to welcome its first South African biochar Member, B10 Char

B10 was established in 2024 by two ageing commodity traders who had done their fair share of carbon emissions during their careers. They had stumbled upon biochar almost by accident and quickly decided this was a business they could invest in which could both have a real climate impact and a decent financial return.

What started as a hobby project quickly became an obsession, as the two partners went on a rapid learning curve on how this industry works.

Fast-forward 18 months and, by the third quarter of 2025, B10 had its first biochar plant installed in South Africa, fully operational, and with a capacity of around 6000 MT of biochar production a year, equivalent to a CO2 sequestration of 15,000 MT per annum.

Today, B10 employs over 20 people in the Group, and is looking to expand its production with additional lines in 2026 and beyond.

“We are delighted to have become a member of the N.E.P. The goals of the N.E.P fully align with our values, and we are looking forward to meeting like-minded members of the organisation to share experiences”
